KAWIR
The name of this Greek black metal band can also be written as κάβειρος – this is the Greek version. The word means “ancestor”, and Mentor, Stefan Necroabyssious, and Eskarth the Dark One gathered to pay homage to them in 1993, founding a project called Kawir. They recorded one song, which was included in a seven-inch vinyl split with Sigh, released by Cacophonous Records in 1994. After that, Stefan and Eskarth leave the band, and Mentor recruits a new line-up.
After a while, Kawir was joined by drummer Nikos Samakouris (aka Vriareos), with whom the mini-album “To Kawirs” was recorded, followed by a full-length album of the same name, which contained three more songs. Konstantina Strani (now in Dol Ammad), a member of the Europa choir, participated in its creation as a guest vocalist.
In 1999, Mentor and Diavelgenus a.k.a. Archemoros changed their pseudonyms. Erichthonios (keyboardist and drummer) participates with them in the recording of the next album “Epoptia”. This time, the recording team did it on their own. This CD was released in an amount of five hundred copies on the label Storm Productions.
In 2002 and 2003, two more splits were released – one with the band Nocternity, the other with the band Zemial. The first was released on Sombre Records, the second on Apocalyptor Records. The line-up has not changed during this time, but after these recordings Diavelgenus left, so Erichthonios performed the vocals on the new album “Arai”. Bassist Nosoforos and drummer Vriareos were also involved in the recording. This CD was released in 2005 on the German label Solistitium.
In 2006, Kyrck Productions & Armour released a compilation called Dei Kabeiroi, which includes the band’s first full-length album, “To Cavirs”, and remastered tracks from the 1994 Eumenides mini-album. In 2007 Mentor created the folk project κάβειρος. And in 2008, a new Kawir album called “Ophiolatreia” was released on Those Opposed Records. Erichthonios left the band, so Porphyrion performed the vocals on this CD, and Etheras played the keyboards.
Two years later, the band released a mini-album “To Uranus”, which featured such personalities as Sakis Tolis and Hildr Valkyrie. In the same year, the DVD “Athenian Echoes Over Paris” was released, which included a recording of the band’s performance at the Cernunnos festival in December 2008, a video clip and a biography. In 2011, he released a split with the band Scythian. At the same time, the line-up is changing again, and at the moment the band is preparing to release a new album called “Isotheos”.
