WORMED
Wormed is a Spanish technical-brutal death metal band. The band was formed in 1998 in Madrid and is known for its sci-fi and cosmic imagery, lyrics and sound. To date, the band has released four full-length albums.
In the beginning, the first line-up of the band was as follows: Jay Oliver (guitar), Dani (guitar), Guillemot (bass), Andy C (drums). A few months later, the band contacted Phlegethon, Wormed’s official vocalist. He breathed new life into the band, changing the concept of the band from a classic bandwagon to another concept based on outer space, far from imagination. The music turned into an atypical death metal full of diverse influences.
In December 1999, MCD’s first demo “Floating Cadaver in the Monochrome” was recorded in collaboration with Tana Avulsed as a sound engineer. This MCD was well received on the underground scene, selling over 1,500 copies worldwide. There are actually three different editions of MCD with different CD layer designs.
In 2001, the band returned to the studio to record a promo CD “Voxel Mitosis”, which includes one song, due to lack of resources. Despite this, the sound is more professional than on the MCD. After recording the promo CD, Dani left Wormed due to a lack of compromise with the band. Wormed became a 4-piece band: Phlegeton (vocals), J. Oliver (guitar), Guillemoth (bass) and Andy C. (drums). The band gained international recognition by performing at several festivals and concerts around the world, which made it a name on the local and international scene and provoked a great response from the underground audience.
In 2003, the band released their first full-length album, Planisphaerium, on the Macabre Mementos Recs label. (Japan), featuring 7 tracks recorded at Madrid’s VST Studios.
In December 2003, Jay Oliver left the band, so Wormed began looking for a replacement for Jay Oliver, and they found Charlie, the guitarist from Wormineye, a death metal band from Valencia.
In 2004-2006, the band performed at international metal festivals in the USA, Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands; they toured Japan with Goratory (USA) and Vomit Remnants (Japan), and later they toured Europe with Malignancy (USA) and Despondency (Germany).
After a period of inactivity, the band began composing music with Jay Oliver again, this time with Phlegethon on drums. Later, they invited Miguelaud from the Spanish death metal band Human Mincer as a second guitarist. In 2010, the band released the single Quasineutrality on the Spanish label Pathologically Explicit Recordings, and shortly after that, in 2012, they released the album Planisphaerium, and the single Quasineutrality was edited on the North American label Willowtip Records, including bonus tracks and audio remastering at Delta314 Sound Studio.
Considering the possibility of performing live again, the band decided to hire a new drummer, Ricardo Mena, Riky (from the Spanish death metal band Avulsed).
In March 2013, their new album Exodromos was released. The album was recorded by Carlos Santos at Sadman Studios in Madrid, and mastered by Mika Jussila (Amorphis, Impaled Nazarene, Children of Bodom, Nightwish, etc.) at the famous Finnvox Studio in Helsinki, Finland. Exodromos was released on Willowtip Records in the USA and Hammerheart Records in Europe.
Textually, “Exodromos” is a prequel to “Planisferium”; the story tells about futuristic scientific concepts and chaotic visions of the last remaining man in space, Kriegs. This is, in particular, due to the awakening of the “Hrim”, when the last people of the 8th year, called Terraxes, disappeared, and the known universe was swallowed up by a quantum wormhole as a result of a multi-vector reionization in the opposite direction. Krigsu will embark on a journey through the xenos universe to found a new world with human seed.
On March 13, 2018, Wormed released a statement saying that their drummer Guillermo Calero had passed away, but the cause of death was not disclosed. Calero played in Wormed from 2014 until his death and participated in the recording of their third full-length album Krighsu (which was released on March 16, 2016).
After hiring a new drummer (Gabriel Valkazar), Wormed released a new mini-album, Metaportal, in 2019. In 2020, Loudwire proclaimed Wormed the “best” Spanish metal band of all time. Wormed released their fourth album Omegon on July 5, 2024.
